Clinical Research Programs
Improving Clinical Supervision and
Training
“Dr. Reiser’s current research interests include improving clinical
supervision and training using an evidence-based supervision model. Dr. Reiser
has been working with a British psychologist, Derek Milne (www.ncl.ac.uk/nnp/staff/profile/d.l.milne),
examining the effects of implementing an evidence-based supervision model in a
pilot study at the Kurt
and Barbara Gronowski Clinic. Dr. Reiser has trained in the enhanced supervision
model over the last five months by having audiotapes of his weekly supervision
rated on a process evaluation scale developed by Dr. Milne and receiving weekly
feedback on improving the process of supervision. The goal of the current pilot
study is to identify enhanced supervision training outcomes for students and
clients. In phase two of the program, Dr. Reiser and Dr. Milne will provide
training in evidence-based practices to Gronowski Clinic supervisors. Dr. Reiser
believes that this unique evidence-based training program will greatly enhance
student training at the Gronowski Clinic and position the Clinic as a cutting
edge training program in evidence-based supervision practices.”
The STS (Systematic Treatment Selection) Program
As part of our commitment to providing science-based services, we have
implemented a number
of new programs, including the Systematic Treatment Selection program, an
evidence-based treatment
program developed by Dr. Larry Beutler, an internationally recognized clinical
researcher and professor
at PGSP. This program optimizes treatment selection and matches clients to
treatment procedures
allowing clinicians to monitor progress against expected norms.
While it may be surprising, there are over 400 different types of mental
health treatment. Many of these have not been scientifically validated, however,
and it is possible that some of them even cause harm or fail to produce benefit.
By providing “Evidence-based treatments” we assure our clients and consumers
that the assessment, diagnostic, and interventions that we used are state of the
art and have been shown to be effective in sound, scientific investigations.
This alone sets our clinic apart from most others, where the usual practice is
for clinicians to provide the treatments with which they are most familiar, even
if they are not best suited to a particular problem or person.
Dr. Larry E. Beutler is a noted scholar, researcher, and practitioner in the
area of mental health and behavior problems, who is a staff member and
consultant to the Kurt and Barbara Gronowski Clinic. Over the past 25 years, he
and his colleagues have developed and tested a procedure for identifying and
delivering the particular kind of treatment that will be optimally helpful to a
particular client. Systematic Treatment Selection, or STS, is a standard method
of both evaluating a prospective client and of viewing the way that problems
develop and are resolved by the things that a clinician/therapist does. It
provides recommendations and suggestions to the clinician in how to construct
and implement a treatment. Implementing treatments that are “evidence-based”
ensures our clients that the treatment that is recommended and given fit the
nature of the problems presented, the circumstances and life style, the values,
and the personal qualities of the prospective client. It helps us provide you
with the best that is available to help you address your needs and get more from
your life.
Research on Evidence-based Treatment for Bipolar Disorder
In August of 2001, Dr. Reiser received a two-year $576,000 grant from The Health
Trust, a non-profit community resource located in San Jose, to develop a
group-based treatment model designed to improve treatment outcomes for clients
with bipolar disorder in Santa Clara County. Dr. Reiser is currently conducting
a large randomized trial with Dr. Larry Thompson providing structured clinical
treatment services for bipolar disorder at the Alliance for Community Care (at a
large community mental health clinic site) in San Jose and at the Pacific
Graduate School Psychology Gronowski Clinic.
Research on Case Management-Linkage Strategies for Seriously Mentally Ill
offenders
Dr. Reiser recently completed a three year evaluation for a Mentally Ill
Offender Crime Reduction Grant (MIORG) in Santa Clara County, a randomized
clinical trial studying the effects of providing improved linkage to community
services for mentally ill offenders.
Research on Evidence-based Treatments for Schizophrenia and other Serious
Mental Disorders
Currently, Dr. Reiser is the Principal Investigator on a three year Health Trust
grant in collaboration with the Santa Clara County Health and Hospital System to
improve training of community clinicians in working with Transitional Age Youth
and Young Adults with serious mental disorders.
