Information on Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Bipolar Disorder

Treatment Available at Moderate Cost

Assessment and treatment services are available at moderate cost to individuals who have been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder or Manic-Depressive Illness.

Who is Eligible?

To be eligible you must be age 18 or older with a diagnosis of Bipolar I or Bipolar II Disorder and currently receiving treatment from a psychiatrist and on a mood stabilizing medication. Ask your doctor if you are not sure if you qualify. You must be in treatment with a psychiatrist in order to be accepted for psychological treatment at the clinic.

Description of the Services Provided

This program provides evaluation and specially designed individual and group therapy designed to improve your understanding of mood related symptoms, warning signs of mood problems and help you develop realistic coping plans. Research shows that people who receive psychotherapy in addition to medication are better able to manage their moods and may have better treatment outcomes.

What to Expect

People who elect group treatment will meet weekly for 16 weeks, then every other week or monthly for a few more months. Individual therapy will vary according to need but a basic skill-building program is likely to run 12-16 sessions at minimum. Services may be provided by a licensed psychologist or a graduate psychology student under the supervision of a licensed psychologist.

How Will This Affect My Current Treatment?

This program does not replace any services you are currently receiving and it does not involve any changes to your medication.

All information gathered in the course of psychological treatment is confidential subject to certain limitations based on state and federal law. You are under no obligation to participate and may withdraw at any time.
